I have a vivid memory of watching TV one day when my family lived in New Jersey and in between commercials there was this station public service screen that was just that famous painting of Columbus posing in his cumbersome clothing and text slowly faded in that said something like 'Happy Columbus Day'.... I was so confused. I was sure that if really was a holiday someone would have said something to me, or there would have been some kind of sale going on with special shaped candy! It is so taboo to celebrate Columbus Day. Geepers-Creepers...
But I get why. After all, by the time I was 8 or so, when my two sisters closest to me in age wanted to play cowboys and Indians, no one wanted to be the cowboys. So we just played... Indians(pardon the un-P.C.ness). And we knew all about Indians. I mean, we had watched Windwalker, Dances with Wolves and Never Ending Story enough times we knew 'em by heart!
Anyway, I'm fine with not having traditions on this day. Because it means it is one day off that capitalism hasn't ruined for me yet (if anyone read this blog at all, I'm sure I'd get a few comments on that little gem of a quote!).
I wouldn't mind making what we did this weekend a tradition though!
We ate out on a deck with cool paper lanterns...
We played and walked around outside...
And we got lots of exercise!!
What did you do to not celebrate this weekend??

Oddly enough, I did all the exact same things.
heh heh.
I want to be there too!
We went rock climbing at the park here in our town. It was fun, but we could sure use some cousins.
I am SO JEALOUS of your deck dinner. The excercise...eh. I wish I could be close too! We could play Indians!
Uh, I don't think I knew it was a holiday...it doesn't seem to be listed on my Swedish calendar. Who discovered Sweden, anyway? And by the way, Columbus did not discover America....the vikings were there LONG before he ever made it that far. But your time with Em and C. looks wonderful. Wish we could have joined you on that beautiful deck!
